Like many young rural fathers, Jimmy relied on growing corn and beans on borrowed or rented land to feed his family. To earn additional income, he worked as a day laborer on vegetable farms whenever jobs were available. The work was honest—but inconsistent—and rarely provided enough to build a secure future.
"The financial challenges were significant," Jimmy recalls. "Many times I couldn't find work because there simply weren't enough jobs."
Despite his determination, years of hard work brought little opportunity to move beyond survival. Everything began to change in March 2026, when Jimmy became one of the first producers to join Agros' La Fortaleza Harvest of Hope Center.
"I felt excited and motivated to be part of the project—especially because this opportunity came to my own community."
Today, Jimmy is cultivating jalapeño peppers while learning a completely new way of farming. Through Agros, he has gained hands-on experience in greenhouse production, soil preparation, irrigation systems, pest management, and climate-smart agriculture. But perhaps most importantly, he has discovered what it feels like to invest his work into something that belongs to him.
"Almost everything has been new for me—the technology, the training, the infrastructure—but what means the most is knowing this crop is mine."
As Jimmy watches his first harvest develop, he sees much more than growing peppers.
He sees the fulfillment of a dream.
After years of working on someone else's land, he is becoming an agricultural entrepreneur—building a business that can provide stability for his wife, security for his daughter, and opportunities for generations to come.
"Having my own crop was a dream that once felt far away. Now I'm working every day to make it a reality."
For Jimmy, this opportunity represents far more than additional income.
"It means an inheritance and a future for my family."
His greatest hope is simple and steadfast.
"My prayer is that God gives me the strength to keep moving forward."
