The Journey of a Central American
Family from Intergenerational Poverty
towards Enduring Prosperity

CENTRAL AMERICA

The Aguilar family

In the heart of rural Central America lives a courageous family. Just over five years ago, they made a risky decision to forge a new path, diverging from the cycle of extreme poverty that had defined their lives for generations.

This is the story of Victor Aguilar, his wife Sadia, and their three children, and their journey to enduring prosperity.

Victor spent more than three decades working on farms: cutting coffee and planting basic grains.

His work took him away from his family, migrating from farm to farm.

For years, Victor and his wife struggled as vulnerable, landless farm laborers, trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Despite the rigors of his agricultural
labor, he earned only about
US$0.85 per day,
- a sum insufficient
to adequately meet the needs
of his family: the daily bread
of nutritious food, a dignified home,
basic health, and education.

The Intersection of Deep Need
and Unique Opportunity

The opportunity: Victor's life took a dramatic turn when he decided to join the Agros program for landless farmers. Motivated by the dream of owning and working his own land, as well as providing a decent home for his family, Victor found a comprehensive solution to his needs through Agros.

Over the years, the program provided him with access to agricultural land, decent housing, basic services, technical assistance, ongoing productive training, and access to formal markets.

From adversity to success: Victor's participation in Agros has resulted in a remarkable transformation. Over the years, Victor has become a highly successful agriculture businessman, a skilled producer who manages the farm and saves for the future. His agri-business is profitable, contributing to significantly higher income and growth in his assets and family wealth. Now, the family of five lives in their own home, on a farm that they own themselves, and Sadia looks forward to starting her own business.

Víctor and Sadia's children will inherit a prosperous future. Not only have their lives changed in this generation but also for generations to come. Their success is a testament to their courage, their determination, and their hard work in each step of their journey.

“I had nothing, but now, having land and a house has been the greatest blessing for our family. Now I can access bank loans. Having our home and stability with my family is a joy and happiness for us and for our children.” Victor Aguilar said.

La Bendición Village

Before founding La Bendición village, its 264 acres consisted of a rustic farm. After replanting with hardy rootstock and resilient new coffee varieties, the area began to thrive.

La Bendición is home to 41 families who have reached US$35,000 of average net worth.

This village has achieved a greater net worth than the average Agros program of US$23,000, due to its business model focused on growing coffee and, to a lesser extent, vegetables and basic grains.

85% of the 41 families own their coffee farms, and most of them hire about eight part-time employees to support the large-scale coffee harvests each season, which generates more than 300 employment opportunities for the region.

Eight years later, the entire community has reached enduring prosperity. Families live abundant lives with hope and optimism for the future, and they are an inspiration to others.

In Agros' first 30 years, we impacted 10,000 lives. In the next 10 years we reached 10,000 more. Now, we intend to transform 30,000 more lives in the next 10 years – an acceleration factor of 3x.

When you invest in AGROS, you are investing in holistic transformation of Central America families.
