"We were tired of doing one thing at a time," said Bill Davis, Senior Pastor at Greenwood Christian Church. This frustration with fragmented efforts at combating poverty led Bill to Agros, where he found a holistic vision for providing families with the tools and opportunities to pull themselves out of poverty. Greenwood's six year partnership with the Agros village of San Jose, Nicaragua, has transformed the livelihoods of the 29 families living there -- but, according to Bill, the effects on the hearts and minds of their congregation have been even more profound.

2015 was a courageous year at Agros. How can we help rural farmers move from poverty to prosperity? The secret is that we can't do it alone. After stabilizing families within our villages and building their capacities, we must look the private sector to help our farmers generate steady income.

For a farmer, making money is not just a matter of having the technical skills or applying the correct agricultural practices. It’s about markets. Lining up customers to buy their produce. Farmers don’t get paid unless they have a buyer. So, making the money they need to support their families, pay for school supplies, and be ready for emergencies - the money required to live a dignified and prosperous life - requires integration with bigger markets, where there is consistent demand and profit for their labors.

Like you, I’m a donor. To Agros, to social justice organizations, my local film festival and my beloved alma mater. I love philanthropy. That’s why I’m in this business. When you live with a sense of generosity, believing that you have more than enough, that perception becomes real. Giving makes me feel powerful, connected, and whole.

Hi, my name is Andrea. I’ve been Agros Interim Director of Development since April of this year. I’ve been a fundraiser for more than 20 years. It’s my life calling. I believe asking people to give is sacred. So when the email receipt for your gift shows up in my inbox, I pause, look at your name, note the gift amount, and do a little skippy dance. I imagine your face. I wonder about your story.
